Finishing Your Internship

Before You Go

As an intern nears the 400-hour mark, there are certain procedures that need to be completed. Some of these are requirements of the ITLS department, and some are necessary for the IT-IS team. It is important for the intern to follow closing procedures for all interested parties.

One critical part of the exit procedure is the completion of assigned projects. Even though the internship is complete after the 400 hours, no project should be left undone. If it will not be possible to complete the task, arrangements need to be made to transfer the project to the regular staff.

If the internship is paid, it should be noted that the terms of the internship and terms of the employment are separate. A discussion should occur between the intern and supervisor regarding the end of the internship. In some cases, arrangement may be made to continue the employment after the internship.

Internships should conclude with an exit interview. This may be informal, but it gives the intern and supervisor opportunity to discuss performance and experience. This will help both parties improve their experiences. It is also an excellent time to discuss the possibility for letters of recommendation and future prospects.

Also note there are ITLS requirements for completion of an internship. Be sure to complete the Internship Evaluation, the Internship Report and any other requirements.
