Interning through IT-IS gives students valuable work experience in a rich and rewarding environment. Students have opportunity to learn many new skills, learn from enthusiastic and dedicated professionals, and help further education at Utah State University.
Two types of internships are available through the IT-IS office. They are paid and unpaid internships. Each has unique facets and challenges, but both provide rich experience.
In addition to duties outlined by the IT-IS office, students are responsible to complete the additional work required for internships. This includes, but is not limited to, quarterly reports, final reports, and other paperwork outlined in the Internship Handbook provided by the ITLS department.
Paid Internships
Paid internships are only available when need and funding are sufficient. IT-IS works with the ITIS department to make these opportunities available whenever possible. When no such opportunity exists, the paid internship position is not an option.
Paid internships are treated like regular employees for the IT-IS office. The student is expected to fulfill all required tasks and be a part of the development team. Interns will be working with the staff to manage courses for USU instructors. This may include building, modifying, and maintaining courses in Blackboard, as well as a variety of other tasks related to education at USU.
Because paid interns are regular employees, they are held to the high standards of behavior and excellence expected of all employees. Failure to meet these standards may result in termination, which also would end the internship.
Unpaid Internships
For students wishing to intern at IT-IS without payment, there are unique opportunities. Often, an instructor will request a special project, or such a project will be requested by the IT-IS staff. These tasks will become the responsibility of the unpaid intern. Working directly with the experts in the department, interns will be able to use their creativity and skills to complete these tasks.
Though these interns are not paid, they are still held to the same standards of quality and professionalism that are expected of regular employees. An unpaid intern may have the internship discontinued due to misbehavior, poor performance, or other negative issues.
